Time building (12:10)

(first version: "Elephantoms and horseas", 1995)(from "The best (I can do)")

Morning comes and finds me entangled to the blankets
drownin' in the smoke of my last cigarette
eyes turned red, my empty hands stroke no more her hair
but try to catch the air of a minute
that's gonna be deflated...

I'm the clock's short hand and watch the big one
to detect how could she run so faster than me
Ah, but she keeps on running,
she doesn't feel my pain,
and now she laughs at me and I die...
What's your use now that I'm gone and lost,
you can run alone, 'till your nice head begins to turn
Come on, live your sixty movements,
'cause you'll have to live the next
exactly in the same way, forever!
But me, what am I going to be, now that I'm dead, gone, lost,
but tied to you, one-hand clock...
I can't say that everyday
is the same of the day before and the next,
because I'm not able to recognise them, one from another
I've no past, no future, and my present doesn't go by...
Oh, God, am I going mad?
All these strange dark lights have now filled my eyes
I can hardly see, my dark side is living!
I'm a butterfly on the grass,
searchin' for a comfortable petal
to rest a while from this hard work,
that's to dance o'er the flowers,
filling with joy the eyes of the otters
And that working ant, she, looking at me, asks:
"What time is it?" "It's today!"
Shouting out and loud, want everyone to know that I'm here,
but there, far in the East,
I recognise the movements of my beast
Walks towards me, looks at me, runs to me, chases me,
waits for me, plays with me, howls at me, finds me!
I can hear her breathing, there's no place to hide,
it's too late, I know, she's caught me!
I'm the clock's short hand and watch the big one
to detect how could she run so faster than me
Ah, but she keeps on runnin', she doesn't feel my pain
and now, she laughs at me, and I die...
Goodbye, one-hand clock, I just have to go,
my head is gone, my brain is so faster than me
It knows no sand-glass, sun-dial,
it builds its time itself and now I smile at you,
for I have learnt how it does!
